About the Topic
Relax and enjoy a trip down memory lane as we use eighth-grade
arithmetic to examine some puzzles that have intrigued logicians
and mathematicians for thousands of years. From a Chinese
emperor to a U.S. founding father to many lesser known
contemporaries, Magic Squares continue to amuse and challenge
people of all ages.
About the Speaker
Upon graduation from Cornell in 1956 with a degree in
mathematics, Bob served as operations officer on a U.S. Navy
destroyer escort in preparation for retrieving astronauts from
space. He then joined IBM as a programmer at the Goddard Space
Center, working on the Mercury and Gemini manned space flights.
In 1964 Bob came to Poughkeepsie to work on the operating
system for the System/360 mainframe computers. Before retiring
in 1992 he served in managerial, staff, instructor, and technical
writing positions. He was honored to be invited to IBM’s annual
Corporate Recognition Event in 1970.
He remained active in the Navy Reserve, retiring in 1986 with
the rank of Navy Captain. For his work with the Office of Naval
Intelligence he was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal.
Bob has served on the Spackenkill Board of Education and the
Dutchess County School Boards Association. He is active with the
Math and Physics Exploration, a local non-profit organization,
and with two veterans groups.
Bob joined the ACM in 1960 and was an active member for thirty
years, serving as national treasurer of the Special Interest
Group on Measurement and Evaluation (SIGMETRICS) for six of those
years.
