Hackerspaces (and makerspaces) combine access, education, and a sharing spirit to foster new skills and inspire people of all ages. At Squidwrench we've guided people from the very basics of electronics, through to hand-soldering components that are almost too small to see. We've developed apps for Android devices, built furniture using a mig welder, screen printed shirts on a hand built jig, and laser cut parts for animatronic plants. We were the first makerspace in the Hudson Valley, and through workshops, special events, and just plain setting an example, we've helped hundreds of people (some from as far away as Germany) teach, learn, and, most importantly, create things. This talk will be a brief history of what Maker Culture means, and the journey Squidwrench has taken from squatting in restaurants to organizing local Maker Faires and advising aspiring maker groups. About the Speaker: I am the founder of Squidwrench (, the Hudson Valley's oldest hackerspace. For money I currently lead a team of engineers at DigitalOcean (, a growing provider of cloud hosting. In past lives, I've worked as an IT Architect for IBM's World-Wide Design Centers, as well as at Cisco and Nortel.
