About the Topic
This talk will give an overview of the Semantic Web which provides a common framework for data format and exchange using standards approved by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). It extends HTML, which is mostly suited for serving human readable documents, to a more robust technology enabling machine readable data for linking applications across the web. The talk will include an overview of key semantic technologies such as the Resource Description Framework (RDF), SPARQL (an RDF query language), Ontologies and the Web Ontology Language (OWL). Semantic technologies are particularly useful in healthcare applications to enable interoperability of electronic medical record systems, knowledge representation of medical experts, and data analytics. Several applications of semantic technologies to healthcare will be presented based on research projects currently underway at RPI including the Healthy Birth, Growth, and Development Knowledge Integration project funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
About the Speaker
John Sheehan is a Computer Science Professor and Program Coordinator at SUNY Ulster and a Ph.D. student and research assistant for the Tetherless World Constellation at RPI. His research interests are in healthcare informatics and medical applications of semantic technologies. He has a B.S. in Computer Engineering from SUNY New Paltz, a Master of Engineering and an MBA in Management of Technology from RPI. See full bio.
