About the Topic

Decades before inkjet and laser printers rendered them obsolete, pen plotters painstaking drew computer graphics on paper, point by point and line by line. Reminiscing about his long-gone HP 7475A plotter prompted one of Ed's blog readers to sent him a box stuffed with history and rodent droppings.

Ed will explain how to bring an HP 7475A plotter back to life with a combination of chemistry, electronics, solid modeling, 3D printing, Linux, and Python, all topped with a splash of ink. The plotter will occasionally interrupt the presentation with noise bursts and you can take home a colorful souvenir of the 1980s.

About the Speaker

Ed Nisley worked for IBM during the final Good Old Days, quit before it became fashionable, and has worked on interesting and useful projects ever since. He fixes broken things, writes columns for Circuit Cellar and Digital Machinist magazines, and tinkers with hardware & software & firmware. Being that type of guy, he rides a recumbent bicycle festooned with 3D printed parts and amateur radio gear.
