About the Topic

In our global, interconnected world, it is critical that our students have the skills to harness the incredible power of digital technologies to enhance human potential for creativity and communication. However, this requires us to be aware of obstacles to learning that they may encounter as a consequence of their use of digital technologies. This presentation looks at some of the deleterious effects of digital tools on cognition, memory and attention and thus challenges the assumption that Technological Progress = Human Progress.

About the Speaker

Samrat is a former software engineer/programmer who currently teaches physics, mathematics and software programming courses at Wallkill High School. Samrat was born and raised in India and came to the US at the age of 24. He worked for several years as a Java programmer, both in India and the US, before deciding to become a teacher. He is currently engaged in graduate mathematics research with his mentor, Dr. David Clark, at SUNY New Paltz. He is interested in the advances in digital technologies as they pertain to the question of human well-being and flourishing.
