About the Topic

Harvest was a true one-of-a-kind computer built by IBM in Poughkeepsie for the US government. It was one of the biggest computers ever built and had a number of unique capabilities, including a storage system that was unique for its time and many years to come. This talk will focus on the unique architecture of the system, and motivate that architecture with a brief discussion of the kind of problems it was built to work on. We'll close with a brief discussion of programming issues for the system.

About the Speaker

Peter Capek retired from IBM Research in 2005 after 35 years. During his career he worked in a wide variety of areas including computer-based communication and networking, architecture, computer security and distributed data.
